C’est effectivement un duo légendaire que ce binôme Drexciya ! Formé en 1989 par James Stinson et Gerald Donald dans un Détroit alors en pleine révolution techno. M…ais à bien y écouter, le son de Drexciya n’a rien du rythme au kick bien droit (dit 4×4) de la techno (à l’instar de Stacey Pullen, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Carl Craig ou du grand Jeff (Mills!)). Non, Drexciya semble être dans la droite lignée de Juan Atkins époque Cybotron ou Model 500 bref ce qu’on appelle Electro, (terme aujourd’hui galvaudé désignant l’ensemble des musiques électroniques).
Le nom Drexciya, vient un peu d’une histoire à dormir debout… Je m’explique, Drexciya ou Drexciyan, pour nos deux compères, est issu d’une mythologie de leur invention selon laquelle les habitants des profondeurs (‘Deep Sea Dweller’) seraient les descendants d’une femme noire esclave, enceinte jusqu’aux yeux, tombée par dessus bord le bateau qui ralliait l’Afrique aux Amériques ! Forcément une histoire pareille ça marque, ça marque énormément leur musique !
Leur tonalité est donc l’Electro, souvent barrée voire expérimentale mais en tout cas irrésistible et entraînante. Leur discographie n’est pas très étoffée, une douzaine de maxis, trois albums et deux compilations en 13 ans d’activité (jusqu’à la mort en 2002 de James Stinson) ! Ils signeront sur des labels de prestige comme Shockwave, Submerge, Underground Resistance, Warp, Rephlex… excusez du peu ! Pour faire rapide je dirais que Drexciya est le pont entre Aphex Twin et UR ! De nombreux titres sont devenus des hymnes, des standards du genre comme ‘Sea Snake’, ‘Black Sea’ ou encore ‘Bubble Metropolis’ (un titre de 1993 qui fait toujours son effet pour l’avoir joué pas plus tard que mercredi dernier au Shari-Vari de Rouen!).
Aujourd’hui ces trésors en vinyles valent des petites fortunes et certains d’entre nous sont passés à côté tout simplement parce qu’ils n’étaient pas nés ! C’est là qu’entre en scène le généreux label hollandais Clone qui coup sur coup a sorti deux double-packs vinyles bleus ou noirs intitulés ‘The Journey Of The Deep Sea Dweller – Pt 1 & Pt 2′ (existe aussi en CD) qui permet donc à chacun d’avoir dans sa discothèque personnelle les plus grands moments de Drexciya et pour les grands malades qui ont déjà toute la discographie du duo d’avoir des pressages neufs ! Le deuxième volume est sorti à la mi juin chez tous les bons disquaires dont Syncrophone à Paris !
Depuis la disparition de James Stinson, Gerald Donald est loin d’être inactif ou aux oubliettes, je suis moi même resté bouche bée qu’il était derrière les projets suivants : Arpanet, Glass Domain, Heinrich Mueller, Intellitronic, Japonese Telecom, Z Therapy, Rudolf Klorzeiner !!! Mais c’est pas tout, Gerald fait partie des groupes suivants : Abstract Thought, Der Zyklus (dont le mythique titre ‘Forevernevermore’), Dopplereffeckt, Dr Finn & Dr Otto Henke, Flexitone, Elecktroids, etc…
En quelques mots j’espère avoir pu partager mon estime pour des artistes comme Stinson et Donald qui ont forgé et influencé nombre d’électroniciens en herbe ou en haut de l’affiche.

This duo, Drexciya, is legendary indeed ! It was founded in 1989 by James Stinson and Gerald Donald in Detroit, which was in the middle of its techno music revolution back then. Yet, when you listen closely, Drexciya sounds nothing like the usual sraightforward 4/4 techno beat (just like Stacey Pullen, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Carl Craig or great Jeff (Mills!) ). Instead, Drexciya appears to be the legacy of Juan Atkins’ Cybotron era or Model 500, in short, what is called Electro (this term, which is today overused, now covers all electronic musics.)
Their name, Drexciya, comes from some kind of tall story… Drexciya, or Drexciyan, comes from a mythology the two mates invented, according to which creatures, called the Deep Sea Dwellers, are the progeny of a female black slave, who was pregnant up to her eyes and fell from the boat that was bringing her to America ! A story like this one can only impact you, and it impacts their music pretty much !
Their sound is indeed that of Electro music, often crazy and sometimes even experimental, but always irresistible and catchy. Their discography isn’t really rich, a dozen EPs, three LPs and two compilations in 13 years of activity, until James Stinson’s death in ’02. They were signed up on prestigious labels, such as Shockwave, Submerge, Underground Resistance, Warp or Rephlex, and believe me, that ain’t nothing ! Long story short, I’d say Drexciya is the bridge between Aphex Twin and UR ! Many of their songs became anthems, mostly standards like « Sea Snake », « Black Sea » or even « Bubble Metropolis » (a song from 1993 I played last Wednesday at the Shari-Vari in Rouen, and that still works pretty well!).
Today, these vinyl treasures are worth the whole world, and some of us missed them for the simple reason that they weren’t born ! This is where one generous Dutch label, Clone, came up. They released two black and blue double vinyl packs, entitled « The Journey of the Deep See Dweller – Pt 1 & Pt 2 » (these also exist as compact discs), which allow everyone to have in their personal XXX Drexciya’s greatest moments, and the insane ones who already had them all to get brand new discs ! Volume two was released last June in every good disc shop, including Syncrophone in Paris.
Since James Stinson’s death, Gerald Donald has never been inactive or forgotten, and even I was rendered speechless when I learned he was behind the following projects : Arpanet, Glass Domain, Heinrich Mueller, Intellitronic, Japonese Telecom, Z Therapy, Rudolf Klorzeiner… ! In a few words, I hoped to share my appreciation of the two great artists Stinson and Donald are, them who forged and influenced lots of electro musicians, whether they be newcomers or on top of the charts !
