Mettons de côté l’électronique deux minutes, laissons-nous tenter par Fink. Oui, la folk est mon point faible musical et un peu de douceur ne nous fera que du bien! Du moins, je l’espère.

Finian Greenal est né en 1972 à Cornwall mais a grandi à Bristol. Il a grandi dans la musique puisque sa mère travaillait dans le domaine de la musique classique et son père était un musicien folk. Finian racontera lors d’une interview que la seule chose que son père ne le laissait pas toucher lorsqu’il était enfant, était une vieille guitare acoustique Martin. A part ça, leur présence a eu un impact sur son avenir dans la musique. Il expliqua que grandir dans une maison où la musique est un facteur important a été bénéfique pour lui, la musique était devenue une chose parfaitement naturelle.

C’est en 2000 qu’il sort un premier album Electro, Fresh Produce chez Ninja Tune. En 2006, Fink sort son premier album folk nommé Biscuits for breakfast. Un choix osé, acclamé par la critique et par un succès certain. En 2007 sort son deuxième album folk, Distance and time toujours chez Ninja Tune, qui devient alors bien plus qu’un label totalement dédié à la musique électro. 2009 marque la sortie de son troisième album folk, Sort Of Revolution. Un album avec une tournure Blues bien plus marquée.

Perfect Darkness:

L’écriture de cet album a commencé début 2010 pour Fink. C’est à Los Angeles que l’album fut enregistré par le producteur Billy Bush (qui a travaillé avec Beck et Garbage). Ce n’est que le 27 Mars 2011 que la piste  » Perfect Darkness  » fut mise en téléchargement via le site du groupe, suivie du l’annonce de la sortie de l’album le 13 Juin toujours chez Ninja Tune.

Mais attaquons-nous maintenant au contenu. Dix compositions, à la noirceur Blues raffinée et élégante. Teintées de pointes folk/indie et même rock. Le choix d’ouvrir l’album avec le titre Perfect Darkness était donc bien pensé car, dés le début, les frissons sont présents. Au même titre que cette balade country-side de Save it for Somebody else ou même de Fear is like Fire, sur lequel nous retrouvons l’influence de Neil Young, le titre Yesterday was Hard on All of us est incroyablement minimaliste. Bien loin de vouloir révolutionner la folk, Fink manie sa guitare avec humilité et émotivité, nourri d’influences bien plus riches qu’elles n’en n’auraient l’air. C’est ce blues raffiné du titre Honesty qui montre le large éventail d’influences de cet artiste. Mais comment aurait-il pu mieux fermer cet album si ce n’est avec le titre Berlin Sunrise ? Une perle émotive, Fink sait écrire ça ne fait aucun doute. Il se livre sans en faire trop, juste ce qu’il faut. Celui qui a écrit pour Amy Winehouse, John Legend ou encore Professor Green n’a pas perdu sa plume. Ses arrangements aussi subtils que chez Peter Gabriel, ses gestes économes et ses mains riches d’harmonie encore plus profonde font de Fink un musicien reconnu.
 Pour soutenir l’album, le groupe a pris la décision de renforcer son live. Non pas avec d’autres musiciens, mais avec une production visuelle, conçue par 59 Productions, connue pour avoir travaillé avec Jónsi et sur la scène du spectable War Horse.
Tout dans cet album est histoire d’équilibre, si Fink reste le seul musicien  » folk  » du label Ninja Tune, ce n’est pas pour rien. Le raffinement mélodique et le cocon sonore dans lequel se reposer sont deux éléments qui font de cet artiste une perle rare. Alors oui, tamisez l’éclairage de votre chambre et glissez-vous dans son univers.

En bref: Un voyage assuré pour vos oreilles.  » Raffiné  » est le mot qui définit cet album que je vous recommande vivement!

Let’s forget the electronic for two minutes and let us be tempted by Fink. Yes, folk music is my musical weakness but a little bit of softness could only benefit! At least, I think.
Finian Greenal born in 1972 at Cornwall but he grew up in Bristol. He grew up in music because his mother used to work in classical music sector and his father was a folk musician. Finian said in an interview that the only thing that his father didn’t allow him to touch during his childhood was an old Martin acoustic guitar. Except this, their presence had a real impact on his future within music. He explained that growing up in a house where music was an important factor was beneficial to him: music became something natural.

He released a first electro album in 2000, Fresh Produce, with Ninja Tune. In 2006, Fink released his first folk album called Biscuits for Breakfast. It was a daring choice but acclaimed by reviews and success. In 2007, his second folk album was released, Distance and Time, still with Ninja Tune, which became more than an electronic music dedicated label. 2009 is the year of his third folk album release, Sort Of Revolution, which has a strong Blues touch.

Perfect Darkness :

The composition of this album begun in the early 2010 and it was recorded at Los Angeles by the producer Billy Bush (who worked with Beck and Garbage). The track ‘Perfect Darkness’ was made digitally available on the 27th of March 2011 via the band’s website, followed by the announcement of the release of the album on the 13th, still with Ninja Tune.

Let’s talk about the content. There are ten compositions of dark refined and elegant blues with folk/indie and also rock touch. The idea of opening the album with the track Perfect Darkness was clever because, from the beginning, we tremble. As this country-side walk ‘Save it for somebody’ or ‘Fear is like Fire’ (in which we can find the influence of Neil Young), the track Yesterday was Hard on All of Us is incredibly minimalist. Far from revolutionizing folk music, Fink handles his guitar with humility and emotions, brought up with influences which are more important that they could seem. It is this refined blues that we can hear in the track Honesty, which shows the huge range of influences for this artist. How could he have closed this album better than with the title Berlin Sunrise? An emotive pearl: Fink knows how to write, there is no doubt. He reveals himself but not too much, just what’s necessary. The man who wrote for Amy Winehouse, John Legend and even Professor Green didn’t lose his pen. His arrangements, as subtle as Peter Gabriel, his saving gesture and his hands full of harmony make Fink a recognized musician.
To support the album, the band decided to reinforce their live. Not with musicians, but with a visual production, made by 59 Productions, which is famous thanks to their work with Jónsi and on the stage of the War Horse show.
Everything in this album is based on balance. If Fink is still the only « folk » musician within Ninja Tune, there is a reason. The melodic elegance and the sound cocoon in which we can rest are the two elements that make this artist a real treasure. You can filter the light in your bedroom and get in his universe.

To sum up: a guaranteed travel for your ears. “Refined” is the word which define this album that I truly recommend!
