L’année dernière, le duo Soul Clap nous avait gratifié d’un excellent DJ-Kicksprouvant ainsi que le duo pouvait aller au-delà de leurs productions funky, presque house, et aller plus loin dans le processus de création artistique. Ils décident enfin de se lancer dans le grand bain en nous délivrant leur premier album EFunk.
Quand un groupe s’appele Soulp Clap et que leur album s’appelle EFunk, on s’attend à des pures tubes funk-house, à l’image d’un Breakbot par exemple. Point de tubes ici mais bel et bien une musique peut-être plus subtile, plus fine et plus cohérente. On se ballade entre funk, new wave et house de Chicago sans être dérouté pour autant vu la corrélation incroyable qui existe entre les morceaux. Intro jazzy classieuse, tracks funky (Take It Slow en featuring avec Franceska, Clapping Song), house (Lets Groove On en featuring avec Jules Born, Need Your Lovin en featuring avec Mel Blatt), pop (Trouble Trouble Trouble), EFunk c’est le tableau groovy de deux amis, Charlie Levine et Eli Goldstein, qui s’amusent avec leurs influences pour produire leur propre musique, à la croisée des styles dominants les années 80.
Harmonieux et d’une élégance rare, comme en témoigne le magnifique dyptique Island In The Space qui conclu l’album, EFunk de Soul Clap est un album à apprécier calmement, seul ou entre amis, et prouve qu’il n’y a pas forcément besoin d’un titre accrocheur quand on veut réaliser un bon disque.

Last year, the duet named Soul Clap gave us an excellent Dj-Kicks that proved that they could go beyond their funky and almost house-like tracks and go farther their artistic creative process. They finally have decided to take plunge and release their first Efunk album.
When a band is called Soul Clap and their album is entitled Efunk, we can definitely expect some pure funk-house hits, like Breakbot for instance. They are no hits here, but some genuine, more subtile and coherent music. This album fluctuates between funk, new wave and Chicago house music, without loosing the sewing thread that connects the tracks. It begins first with a classy and jazzy intro, continues with funky track (like Take It Slow feat. Franceska or Clapping Song), then you have some house music (with Let’s Groove On feat. Jules Born and Need Your Lovin’ feat. Mel Blatt). The album goes on with some pop music (Trouble Trouble Trouble). Efunk is the groovy result of two friends, named Charlie Levine and Eli Goldstein, who are having fun with their musical influences in order to produce their own music dealing with the major musical styles of the 80s.
Efunk is harmonious and elegant like it rarely happens, which completely confirmed by the magnificent diptych Island In The Space that ends the album. It’s an album that you must appreciate in a quite atmosphere, alone or surrounded by friends. It also proves that you don’t need a catchy title to make a good record.
