The Cinematic Orchestra est un groupe aux influences variées : Jazz, down-tempo, classique. Il a été fondé en 1999 par Jason Swinscoe, qui était alors employé par la maison de disque londonienne Ninja Tune. Après avoir signé un remix pour Ninja Tune, Jason Swinscoe se voit proposer par un label allemand d’enregistrer ses propres compositions. Pour des raisons juridiques, Swinscoe doit se dissimuler derrière un autre nom : The Cinematic Orchestra. Ce sera finalement avec Ninja Tune qu’il sortira son premier album intitulé « Motion ».
Pourquoi avoir choisi comme nom de groupe The Cinematic Orchestra ? Dans les années 1990, Swinscoe monte son propre club : le Loop. Le concept fondateur était pour les DJ comme pour les musiciens instrumentistes de refaire la B.O d’un film de leur choix.

In Motion :

Vous l’aurez compris, Jason Swinscoe a toujours été fasciné par la relation entre la vue et l’ouïe. En allant du classique (qualifié par certains de « surréaliste ») de René Clair « Entracte » (The Cinematic Orchestra) à « Outer Space » de Peter Tscherkassky (Dorian Concept & Thom Chant), les musiciens ont écrit avec une finesse émotionnelle remarquable un album harmoniquement incroyable. A ma connaissance, aucun compositeur moderne n’a su allier aussi bien la musique classique à l’imagination visuelle. Cette finesse se ressent facilement en écoutant les sept titres présents sur cet album.

Cet opus est le premier d’une série initiée par Jason Swinscoe pour le label Motion Audio. Quand on y regarde de plus près, les artistes ayant participé à cet album sont des pointures de la composition moderne: Austin Peralta (originaire de L.A), Grey Reverend (New York), Dorian Concept (Autriche) et Tom Chant, accompagnés des autres membres de The Cinematic Orchestra (Londres). C’est d’ailleurs à Londres qu’ils se retrouveront le 30 juin prochain, au Barbican, pour une production musicale collective. Selon Jason Swinscoe, « il est rare d’avoir autant de talents assidus sur une même scène, prêts à jouer de magnifiques nouvelles interprétations de films classiques passés et futurs ».
Le titre qui résumerait le mieux l’esprit de cet opus et qui est d’ailleurs en écoute libre serait pour moi « Entracte ». Ce morceau témoigne d’un travail de composition époustouflant, digne d’une symphonie d’un Bernstein des temps modernes. Comment ne pas être projeté dans un univers imaginé par TCO, dans lequel il est facile de se perdre entre mélancolie, angoisse, trouble et douceur ? L’impression étrange « d’entendre un film » est une sensation unique en son genre. La beauté est présente, il suffit de simplement fermer les yeux et de vous laisser prendre au jeu de l’imagination proposé par cette troupe de génies.

L’album se poursuit comme un poème de Charles Bukowski, avec légèreté et élégance. Laissez vagabonder votre imagination, car rien n’égale l’écoute de ce chef d’œuvre, qualification que je lui donne sans concession.

 The Cinematic Orchestra is a band with varied influences: Jazz, Down-temp and classic. It was founded in 1999 by Jason Swinscoe, who was at the time employed by the record label Ninja Tune from London. After having signed a remix for Ninja Tune, Jason Swinscoe was offered by a German record label to record his own compositions. For judicial reasons, Swinscoe has to hide himself behind another name: The Cinematic Orchestra. Eventually, he brought out his first album entitled “Motion” thanks to Ninja Tune.
Why choosing The Cinematic Orchestra as the band name? In the 1990’s, Swinscoe sets up his own club: the Loop. The founding concept was for the DJ and for the instrumentalist musicians as well to redo the soundtrack of a chosen movie.

As you guessed, Jason Swinscoe has always been fascinated by the relationship between eyesight and hearing. From the classic (said “surrealistic” by some) of René Clair “Entracte” (The Cinematic Orchestra) to “Outer Space” of Peter Tscherkassky (Dorian Concept & Thome Chant), the musicians wrote with an remarkable emotional sensitivity an amazing album, harmonically speaking. To my knowledge, no modern composer succeeded in combining so well classical music to visual imagination. You can easily feel this sensitivity, listening to the seven tracks of the album.

This opus is the first of a series initiated by Jason Swinscoe for Motion Audio record label. When you look at it very closely, the artists who collaborated to this album are references in modern composition: Austin Peralta (from L.A.), Grey Reverend (New York), Dorian Concept (Austria) and Thom Chant, accompanied by other members of the Cinematic Orchestra (London). For that matter, they are about to meet soon there, in London, on the 30th of June, at the Barbican, for a collective musical performance. According to Jason Swinscoe, “It’s a rare thing to get so much talent onto the same stage, focused and bringing great new interpretations to classic and future classic films”.
According to me, the track which illustrates best the spirit of this album, which is by the way listenable on the web, is “Entracte”. This track is of an amazing composing work, worthy of a symphony of a modern Bernstein. How couldn’t we be sent in a universe made up by TCO, in which we can easily lost ourselves between melancholia, anguish, unrest, and softness? The strange impression which is to “hear a movie” is a unique feeling in its kind. Beauty is there, you just have to close your eyes and lose yourself in the game of imagination offered by this troop of geniuses.
The album goes on like a poem of Charles Bukowski, lightly and elegantly. Let your imagination wander, because nothing compares to the hearing of this masterpiece, doubtlessly.
